“As a photographer I strive to reach beyond the common mediums of photography, however, I have long believed there is little one can do that has not already been done! In 2000 I began toying with the idea of combining the artistic medium of photography with the artistic medium of oil painting. I did so with one goal in mind; to create a computer enhanced photographic image that retains the unique characteristics of the photographic image while combining the intriguing depth and appearance of an oil painting. Countless trials and errors where painstakingly endured before I was prepared to put my name on a finished work.
The finished work for which I refer was done for animal activist and author Edd Gibbs Rose during a brief period I spent in Salt Lake City, Utah. In fact… Edd had it reproduced and added to the cover of his latest work, “Wear Your Own Skin!” It is the image of Edd with his two Afghans."

The first step is to transfer the original photograph to the computer. I then work with six separate software programs to enhance the original image. The end result is an image that resembles a painting.
Before I proceed to the next step, I will email you the computer enhanced image of your pet for your approval.

Once we are satisfied with the enhanced image, I print a test copy to compare to the original.

At this point I either make adjustments to the enhanced image… Or, if satisfied, I print the copy that will be used to produce the finished product. All images are printed by an Epson printer using Epson Eight-Color UltraChrome pigment inkset. When combined with Epson Enhanced Matte printing paper the end result is a fade-resistant image lasting up to 100-200 years.

The print is then allowed to cure for a 24 hour period. Once cured, the print is signed and a Protective Spray designed specifically for ink jet prints is applied. The print is then allowed ample time to dry before being mounted.

The next step in The Process is the mounting. The print is applied to a mounting board. The mounted print is then subject to 48 hours of extreme pressure to ensure that the print and the mounting board become permanently bonded together.

Now comes the fun part, the texturing. A blend of 100% Acrylic Polymer Emulsion is applied to the print in numerous layers to achieve the look and feel of an expensive oil painting. Each layer is allowed ample time to dry before the next layer is applied. When the work is finished it has excellent flexibility, resistance to chemicals, water, abrasion and ultraviolet radiation.
